If a tree has grown over your roof, crowded the driveway or looks rough after a storm, this page covers where yours is likely to land in that range.

What a trimming job costs

Two trees of the same height can sit at opposite ends of the range. Height sets the frame. How much of the crown has to come off sets the number inside it.

A tree that needs a few limbs lifted off a driveway is a short job. A tree with a heavy, overgrown crown, or several broken limbs that have to come out in sections, is a long one.

On the phone, a description of the tree is enough to place it somewhere inside the $275 to $1,600 range. The firm figure is written up after a site visit and before any cutting begins.

What pushes the price up or down

Equipment is the biggest swing. Where we can work in the tree itself, the job stays toward the lower end. Where limbs hang over a roof or sit out of safe reach, we bring in the aerial bucket truck. That means more equipment and more setup, and it shows in the quote.

Limbs that are bent or pinned by other branches take more time and care than a clean, free-hanging one. Cleanup is its own cost. Cutting a tree down to size is one job, and leaving the yard clear of debris is another, so the quote spells out which one you're getting.

A small tree with easy access and a light trim lands near the bottom. A tall, dense tree over a structure, with the bucket truck and a lot of material to haul, lands near the top. Most jobs fall between.

Signs the tree needs trimming

Start with the limbs you can see from the ground. Broken branches, torn bark where a limb ripped away, and dead limbs still hanging in the canopy all mean it's time for a look.

Large hail has damaged Wichita homes, vehicles and businesses across the metro, and trees take the same beating. Hail-damaged limbs don't always come down right away, so a tree that went through a storm deserves a look even if it seems fine.

Then look at where the tree is growing. Branches over the roof, limbs close to the house, a garage or a fence, and limbs hanging low across the driveway are the usual reasons to call. If a limb already touches a structure, it's past the point of waiting.

Not every untidy tree needs work this season. A tree that's merely full, with open space around it, can often wait a year. On site we sort out which kind yours is.

How long it takes and what the crew does

We can't give one number of hours that fits every tree. A light trim is a short visit. A big tree with hail-broken limbs takes longer, and we tell you what to expect when we quote it.

Before the first cut, we mark the area where branches will fall and check that it's clear. We plan for any branch under tension so we know how it will move when it lets go. When someone is up in the tree, tools go up and down on a handline attached to the end of the tool, not tossed or carried in one hand. The cutting is done with a chainsaw, from the tree or from the bucket truck, whichever the job calls for.
